Craig Howser 2007 Historic Racing Club Tasman Revival

After a long engine rebuild we returned to pukekohe to race in the leisuretime series,my previous best lap time(with a relatively standrd engine)was 1.20,so was looking forward to some better lap times!!

Decided to join the Arrow Wheels sports & GT class as well to get as many laps in as possible.
Practice was fantastic with a 4th fastest time of 1.16.74.

Off to the 1st race and after a hard battle my first ever First place!!!best lap time 1.15.02.

Needless to say they bumped me up to the Tracer series,so i dont think there will be another win for awhile.

Had a few more good races but on sunday had a bit too much speed on around jennian and had to take to the infield to avoid a collision, kept the car uder control but the inside edge of the ripple strip was dug out and as i came across it some damage was caused!!!

Bent strut, cracked rotor, slight chassis damage, crawled back to the pits, ajusted the steering ready for the next race.

The next race was a great one as i set the best time of the weekend a 1.14.08

Took the car back to the shop and put a cover over it for a few weeks, then onto the chassis machine, replace the broken bits, make a few modifications.
The car now has side stands to make it a bit easier to work on.

Next Race is my first time on the road,we are doing the Hamilton Car Club rally of Waitomo on the 23rd June.

Craig Howser 2008 Historic Racing Club Tasman Revival

Took my new car out last weekend(26 Jan)for the first time.

Had an awesome weekend with a second place in one race.

The car is going great for the first time out, managed to do a 1.14 which is the same as i got out of my last car,
with a bit of sorting we may get a bit more out of it.

Havn't been out this season.

Will be codriving in the Hamilton car club rally this year(2009)and may run the blue car in some Tarmac events.

Craig Howser 2008 Rally Waitomo

Adam and I will be competing in this years Hamilton Rally.

I will be driving my Escort in my first Road event(i have only raced on tracks).
We have a bit of work to set the car up for the road as the track setup is alot stiffer.
We will let you know how it goes!!!

12.55 pm Friday 22 June

Well not such a good start to Rallying.
The car was suffering from a bit of understeer(no im not blaming the car!)
which i thought i was not exceeding the limits, however on stage 3 we slipped off the road.
The damage is not consistent with the "off" but is substantial

Have stripped the car and put most of the running gear in my new Blue car.

Jan 2009.
Have resurected the car, found a nice shell and fitted the cage, now for sale it is a nice tidy car.

Ran it at Pukekohe last month and did a 1.21 which is a good time considering the specs of it.

Craig Howser 2009 HRC Icebreaker

What a great weekend, after not racing at the track for 18 months(why??)it was great to be back.

Finally with a decent Gearbox(Tranex 5 speed straight cut/close ratio),what a difference, nice close gears and it even went into gear every time.
I have been running a standard box all this time and it was not nice!!

Friday practice was a bit damp and since my last trip to the sandtrap i was being a BIG nana.

Saturday was alot better as i got into some close racing which helped my lap times.

Sunday was fine and i was looking forward to a good days racing,
had an awesome battle with an Alfa and we crossed the line with inches to spare(in his favor).

Did my best ever lap time on Sunday with a 1.13 so am stoked.

Next event is Hamton Downs 27 & 28 November.

Craig Taranaki Tarmac Rally 2010

After changing my mind a few times the decision was made on the last day of entries to go and try a rally again, with the main aim being to finish and have fun.

It was to be Mikes first time as a codriver after 20 or so years of driving, needless to say he was just a bit quietly worried i think, but he helped fund and organised the team so i was commited to making sure it went well.

After fittng a Tripmeter and intercom and jack and spare ETC ETC over the previous week,we took the car for a run on wednesday night then back onto the hoist for a check and what do you know the gearbox and the rear brake calipers were leaking so we pulled them all apart and found a broken snout in the gearbox that had been machined for the hydraulic clutch, found another one which we machined up the next morning and got the box back in.

The brakes were another issue,Mike fixed them with some spare seals he had but in the end we got some new seals sent which we got on Friday morning so fitted them up before we left and they worked perfectly.

Even tho we checked our helmets intercom system on Wednesday, when we tried them again just before we parked the car on friday night Mike couldnt hear me which may have been a good thing.
Then the water temp guage stopped working on the way to the first stage, great timing.

Never mind all minor stuff and not enough to stop racing.

We got off to a good run in the first stage and i just drove what i could see,it sure takes a bit of getting used to the fact that the whole road is yours to use and i probably didnt even use it to the best of my advantage all day.

The setup was not quite spot on so after playing with the shocks we raised the rear at lunchtime and the car handled alot better in the afternoon,i borrowed some springs(thanks Adam and Bernard)and altho the ratio front to rear wasnt quite right it was okay for what we wanted to do which was to finish.

We were on a new set of Achilles Tyres(thanks Mike) and alltho i dont have anything to compare them with when it comes to road racing i thought they were great so if you can get Miles to stop listening to his Chickens get down to budget Tyres and get a set, bang for your buck i dont think you could do better.
I am looking forward to trying them at the track to see how they handle there.

Very happy with 49th and Mike suggested entering the TopHalf series so we got 3rd in class!! yeha
Thanks again to Mike,i couldnt have done it without his help and his bro Barry who came down to service.

Should have some photos soon and am uploading video to Youtube, not that exciting to watch as we didnt have any "moments"but we had fun.

Craig Howser 2009 Possum Bourne Memorial

Saturday 22nd August i am taking Adams car(SA1NZ)and having my first drive on gravel.

Not the way i wanted my first Gravel skid to go.

Took the first stage really easy(not hard to work that out, slowest time)but thats ok as i had to get a feel for the car.
We fitted a new gear lever and the selector was not lining up so gear changes were not 100% but we felt we could work with it until service where i could fit a spacer,
I had felt it wasn't quite right but it's not until it got a thrashing in anger that the problem really showed up.

Stage 2 started ok i was braking way too early but was getting a feel for driving on gravel and was confident we could be faster on the second run after lunch.
Towards the end the clutch cable snapped!!
got to the finish stuck in second.

Rolled up to the start killed the engine and hit the starter with it in first gear when the lights went out, eventually it started and after trying to change gears for a few k's we decided to leave it in second.
Thought we had got away with it until about 2 k's from the end there was an awful smashing from under Dave's feet,it turned out the starter motor had broken a lug and was hanging on for dear life by the battery cable.

Well i never thought you would catch me lying in the gravel with HOT oil dripping on me in my nice expensive racesuit(we DONT do that at the Track)but there i was because ya just dont give up until you've tried everything.
We got the starter motor back in with only a bit of melted skin off the arm,but the ol starter wasn't keen to turn the engine over in neutral let alone in gear,so we got a tow to the end where our crew was waiting.

After another hour of trying to get the cable to work we had to admit defeat and managed to roll start down hill and got it into 4th and back to the service park, where i put a spacer under the gearstick and managed to drive to the finish up and down thru the gears with no clutch and no problems at all.

Thats the way it goes,so after entering 2 rallies and not getting past stage 3 i will have to try again.

Thanks to Adam Muir for letting me thrash his car(it's only fair,i do most of the work on it)
Also thanks to Dave Bunyard for being brave(or silly)enough to sit next to me,and MC & Max for servicing.

Back to the track for me 12th sept HRC Icebraker meeting, should be good as i have fitted a Tranex close ratio G/box.

MK2 Esslinger powered-Zakspeed body kit

After having this shell in storage for a number of years the decision was made to do something a bit different-a Zakspeed kit was purchased and fitted.

The engine is to be a 2.3 Pinto(American) and have an Esslinger SVO Alloy Head fitted-This has morphed with a 2.5 stroker crank now fitted.

With many other modifications and an extensive cage this is now a great Car.
